Doncaster September 1962

Doncaster September 1962

On a sunny September 8th 1962, a series of photographs were taken at Doncaster station. The trains were severely disrupted by an accident the previous evening at Offord involving A1 60123 ‘H.A. Ivatt’.

Gresley A4 60010 ‘Dominion of Canada’ acclerates away from Doncaster with the 14.10 1E12 Leeds to King’s Cross train sometime in the afternoon/evening. The engine had worked to Leeds with the 1N02 04:00 King’s Cross to Leeds train earlier in the day, but given the chaos surrounding the diversions, it’s return to London seems to have been delayed. This service was due to be worked by a Finsbury Park Deltic, but given the chaos of the previous 24 hours, the A4 substituted.

Awaiting departure from Doncaster Station Platform 1 on 8th September 1962 is Doncaster B1 61003 'Gazelle', with Class 31 D5835 (later 31302) as pilot, with presumably a train to East Anglia via the Joint Line. The Type 2 had been delivered to Sheffield Darnall shed on 26th April 1962, but is recorded as being a Stratford locomotive from 15th September, a week after this photograph was taken.

Two alternative theories as to the working are that the photo was taken at around 11am in the morning and the train is either a Newcastle to Lowestoft or Doncaster to Yarmouth working. The second theory is that it is around 3:30pm and this is the Newcastle to Colchester train. Please contact us if you know better!

B1 61003, was withdrawn from Colwick shed on Boxing Day 1965, and cut up some time on February 1966. The Class 31 was withdrawn as 31302 from nearby Tinsley shed in March 1989.

Peppercorn A1 60119 'Patrick Stirling' slowly makes its way through Doncaster on the Down Goods line with the 4S04 14:15 Ferme Park to Millerhill freight on 8th September 1962., as an unidentified Thompson B1 approaches with a Down express.

60119 had replaced another engine in Doncaster Decoy sidings and would be replaced itself in Newcastle. The locomotive was condemned at Doncaster Carr shed on 31st May 1964.

By September 1962 the use of pacifics on freights was commonplace, despite the fact that the engine was only 14 years old when the photograph was taken.

The A4 still survives today, having been donated by British Rail in 1966 to the Canadian Railroad Historical Association (CRHA). The locomotive returned home during 2013 as part of the Mallard Festival to mark the 75th Anniversary of the record-breaking run of 4468 "Mallard" on 3rd July 1938.

A yet un-named English Electric Deltic D9010 emits the trademark blue exhaust as it accelerates through Doncaster station with the 1A47 13:30 Edinburgh to King's Cross service; the 'Heart of Midlothian' on 8th September 1962. The locomotive was named 'The King's Own Scottish Borderer' on 8th May 1965 at Dumfries, and withdrawn on 24th December 1981.

The summer timetable of 1962, of which September 8th was the last day, saw the introduction of the first timetable when all 22 of the EE Deltics were available to work. Unfortunately, as with many initiatives associated with the Modernisation Plan, the diagrams allowed little time for maintenance, and gradually they were altered to allow locomotives to attain a reasonable level of availability.

Gresley V2 60950 approaches Doncaster station from the south with what is believed to be the 07.05 Enfield - Scarborough on 8th Septemeber 1962. Trains were in chaos due to a derailment at Offord of A1 60123 'H. A. Ivatt'.

The V2 had been ousted from King's Cross Top Shed at the start of the Summer 1962 timetable, and was withdrawn from Doncaster shed a little over a year after this photograph was taken on 22nd September 1963, and broken up at the Works on the 5th November the same year.

Streak! Gresley A4 60025 'Falcon' passes through Doncaster station with the 1A27 10:35 Newcastle to King's Cross service on 8th September 1962. The train was diverted at Peterborough to run to London via Cambridge due to a derailment at Offord of A1 60123 'H. A. Ivatt'.

The locomotive remained at King's Cross Shed until 16th June 1963 when it was relocated to New England shed until withdrawn on 20th October 1963. It was broken up on 4th January 1964.

The train standing at the Down platform is the 1N48 07:15 Colchester to Newcastle service. This train ran on the old joint line from March through to Doncaster, so was probably unaffected by the diversions around Offord. The Buffet car seen in the photograph was the last coach in the train formation and was removed at York; the rest of the train continuing to Newcastle. The coach was then re-attached on the overnight return working.

Hull Dairycoates K3 61875 passes Doncaster with the 07:35 Hull to Whitemoor freight whilst an unidentified Peak waits to depart with 1A09 from York/Hull to King's Cross on 8th September 1962. The freight train was due through Doncaster at around 9:30am but is running around 30 minutes late. Many of the trains along the East Coast Main Line were disrupted this day due to an accident at Offord involving A1 60123 'H. A. Ivatt' and BR Eastern Region Control would have been working hard to balance the traffic through Cambridge.
